How to Buy a Remote Controlled Car or Truck?

Remote controlled cars and trucks have been around for a long time and they make great toys as well as a great hobby to take up. For many, buying a remote controlled (RC) toy is quite complicated especially if it is their first time buying one. But do not worry; here is a simple guide on how to buy a remote controlled car/truck.

Toy or Hobby-grade?

First of all, what is your purpose for getting a RC car? Is it a toy for yourself or someone else? Or is racing a serious hobby? If you just want a toy-grade RC car, then it is better to start small and cheap. It is best to consult your local store when buying one as they will be of great help to you. Most toy RC cars run on batteries and the charger is included. Nikko, Radio Shack, and Tyco make great inexpensive toy RC cars. If you decide to take racing to the next level, and want get a lot more out of your car, then you will need a hobby-grade car. They are more expensive but offer higher quality, durability, speed and performance.

Get a car, Truck or Buggy?

Now this is mostly up to your personal preferences; how you want your car to look like and what kind of fun you want and the kind of surface you want to drive on. If you choose a RC car, you are limited to driving on smooth surfaces such as the track. Buggies and trucks run well off-road with bumpy terrain. Trucks are very durable and can take harder beatings but if you want an all-rounder to run on the road as well as off-road, then a buggy is best.

Ready-to-Run (RTR) or assemble your kit?

RTR cars are already assembled for you and are ready to run immediately out of the box. Whereas in a RC car kit, your car isn't assembled yet so you need to do that yourself. If remote car racing is new to you, then you should get a RTR vehicle. Once you gain some experience with your car maybe you can upgrade it to a kit and have more fun building it yourself.

Electric or Nitro Car?

Electric cars are powered by batteries while nitro cars run on fuel. If you have a passion for racing, which I am sure you do, then nitro powered cars are much better in terms of speed. However, nitro cars are generally more expensive and you will need more field equipment for your car as well. A battery powered car is better if you do not have such a high budget. Then again this is up to you. There you have it; I hope this guide can help you choose your next remote controlled car. Whether it is just for fun or as a hobby, I am sure you will enjoy having a RC car and playing around with it. Happy racing!
